Having a stockpile is a good tactic, but don't hoard resources as though the age is about to end.In general, it's much better to have the extra towers and troops out and about than to hurry them through production when you're attacked. When you see a resource growing faster than you're using it, move an appropriate number of villagers over to production of a resource of which your use outpaces its production.

I generally make villagers at the first age and put like 10-15 on wood, 10 on food, 5-10 on gold and less then 5 on Stone afther that i start the Feudar Age. I that time my villagers ar makeing resources that i will use on the next age building and troops and so on on evry age but dont forget to add more villagers to worck on the resources.
You should add villagers to resources according your needs. Don't forget that you need to move fast !!!
